The Right to Turn Right
For a perfectly respectable black circle, staying exactly where he was had always been a considerable achievement. The seven lines below him had other ideas.
In this original geometric abstract painting, a solid black circle anchors the upper-left corner while seven parallel lines sweep around their respective corners. Fields of warm ivory, black, and deep blue create a precise composition in which stillness and movement coexist.
The painting inspired a rather peculiar story about the Department of Straight and Narrow, a rebellious line, and the extraordinary consequences of turning right without permission. Beneath the humor is a quieter idea: changing direction need not mean becoming someone else, and staying put can be a choice, too.
The Right to Turn Right is part of Randy Jeffrey's ongoing exploration of geometric abstraction and the unexpected stories that emerge from it.
