The Department of Unnecessary Decisions — Original Geometric Abstract Painting

The Department of Unnecessary Decisions

Some decisions are so important that they require several committees, seven reports, and absolutely no action.

A monumental circle divided between charcoal black and deep burgundy commands the upper half of this original geometric abstract painting. Below, vivid orange and blue angular forms, a smaller blue circle, and intersecting black-and-white lines introduce tension, balance, and a touch of unexpected playfulness against a warm ivory ground.

The painting inspired a rather peculiar story about Mr. Black, Mr. Burgundy, and their colleagues at the Department of Unnecessary Decisions. When Mr. Orange proposes moving the office furniture three inches to the left, an extraordinary bureaucratic ordeal begins. Committees are formed, reports commissioned, and eventually a decision is reached. Unfortunately, nobody can remember where the furniture was in the first place.

Behind the dry humor is a gentle observation about the human talent for making simple things needlessly complicated. The painting itself remains open to whatever meaning its viewer discovers.
