Tattoo
Some artwork hangs on a wall. Some of it goes everywhere with you.
I designed a tattoo for my left wrist.
And then I turned that same design into a painting.
There's something interesting about taking an image you've created for yourself, something that becomes a permanent part of who you are, and giving it an entirely different existence.
On my wrist, it's personal. It's something I carry with me every day.
On paper, it becomes something else.
The lines, shapes, and graphic relationships take on a new presence. What was designed for a small space on my body becomes a composition that can stand entirely on its own.
As I've returned to painting, I've been discovering how much of my artistic identity was already there, waiting to be explored.
Tattoo feels like a particularly literal example of that.
I didn't just make my mark on this painting.
I made it on myself first.
