Four Quarters
One of the hardest things I'm learning as a painter is when to leave something alone.
My natural instinct is often to add another shape, another line, another relationship.
But not every painting wants more.
Four Quarters brings together bold yellow and black curves, a passage of blue, and delicate diagonal lines. Some areas carry considerable visual weight, while others are intentionally quiet.
What makes the composition work for me is that contrast.
The large forms need the smaller details. The darker areas need the lighter ones. And perhaps most importantly, the occupied spaces need the empty ones.
As I develop my own visual language, I'm beginning to understand that restraint can be just as powerful as complexity.
Sometimes the most important decision isn't what to add.
It's what to leave untouched.
