Ascension
I've never been particularly interested in standing still.
There's something about stairs, arches, and pathways that suggests movement, even when nothing is actually moving.
In Ascension, those architectural forms began appearing alongside circles, curves, and strong geometric divisions.
The composition developed a sense of upward motion. A stair-step form suggests a climb. An arch suggests a passage. And somewhere beyond the shapes, there seems to be a destination we can't quite see.
I didn't set out to paint a literal staircase or building. What interests me is how abstract shapes can suggest something familiar without actually representing it.
Maybe that's what I enjoy most about geometric abstraction. It allows me to construct something recognizable while leaving enough room for the viewer's imagination.
And perhaps there's a little of my own story in this painting, too.
After years spent building a career outside the studio, returning to art has felt like beginning another climb.
I'm not entirely sure where it leads.
But I'm enjoying the ascent.
